The British Virgin Islands Activities: The Best Sports & Recreation Centres

The British Virgin Islands (BVI) are a group of more than 60 islands dispersed like emeralds between the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic. British planters ended up taking over the islands from the original Dutch settlers in 1666, and they were designated as a British colony. The British Virgin Islands are still a British Crown Territory and are world-renowned for their excellent sailing and yachting, numerous dive sites, and dazzling beaches.

Just about every neighborhood in the British Virgin Islands has a set of hoops, and on almost any given night, you can find yourself a game or a hoop to shoot around on if you ask nicely and follow the court rules.

The British Virgin Islands scheduled leagues for basketball are quite popular. The scheduled leagues on Road Town and Virgin Gorda were canceled in the fall of 2014 and spring of 2015. However, with the completion of a new, covered basketball court in The Valley, the VG league is anticipated to resume in the fall of 2015.

Every August, a league is sponsored by a local legislator, Julian Fraser, at the Save the Seed Centre on Tortola. For more information on the leagues, contact Guy L Malone, President of the BVI Basketball Federation, at 441-6392, or the Save the Seed Centre at 494-7353.

Cycling Sports Centers in The British Virgin Islands

It’s not unusual to see a cyclist or two—or 20—powering up, down, and around the islands’ dramatic hillsides. There are occasional recreational bikers out for a ride, but most cyclists out here take their sport very gravely and train frequently.

At times, the roadsters compete in races that can last all day and take bikers all the way around the islands. The British Virgin Islands Cycling Federation was founded in 1993 by five people. The Federation now has over 40 members and supporters. Cyclists compete on a local and regional level, and have had success in events such as the Caribbean Cup Mountain Bike series.

Semi-competitive and recreational athletes are motivated to participate in the numerous events held throughout the Territory each year. You can also contact bvicycling@yahoo.com for more information.

Football (Soccer) Sports Centers in The British Virgin Islands

Football dates back to the mid to late 1960s in the British Virgin Islands. Early competition was primarily between visiting British Royal Navy ships and expatriates working in the British Virgin Islands.

The first league was organised in 1968 by a team of Royal Engineers. The British Virgin Islands Football Association was formed as a result of this in 1974, and it became associated with the Federation of International Football Associations in 1996.

The British Virgin Islands Football Association operates a variety of programmes, including women’s and youth programmes. Most of the youth programmes are run through the schools, but the Sea Cows Bay Manatees have a Saturday youth programme.

Every Saturday morning from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m., they play at the Sea Cows Bay Recreation Ground. They cater to children aged 3 to 14 and actively promote parental involvement. Contact the British Virgin Islands Football Association for information on women’s football.

The senior men’s season of The British Virgin Islands Football Association runs from September to May, with three flagship competitions (Terry Evans Cup, Wendol Williams Cup, and The BVI National League) and nine active clubs participating.
