Discover the Old Caribbean Way of Life

Discover the Old Caribbean Way of Life

Discover the Old Caribbean Way of Life On Salt Cay and Grand Turk, the old-world charm of the classic Turks and Caicos can be experienced through the 200-year-old colonial British Bermudian architecture of Cockburn Town, free-roaming donkeys, and ruins from the sea salt industry days.

Another must-see attraction is the Turks and Caicos National Museum, located on Front Street in Grand Turk. Among the museum’s exhibits are thousand-year-old Lucayan artifacts and the Molasses Reef Wreck collection, which includes remains from the oldest European shipwreck excavated in the Western Hemisphere.

Cliffs, Caves, and Spectacular Landscapes

Around the islands, there are numerous scenic areas and natural areas of interest. Middle Caicos, with its two miles of breathtaking cliffs and beaches, and Conch Bar Caves, the largest above-ground cave system in the Bahamas—Turks and Caicos archipelago, probably offers the most to nature lovers.

Another enjoyable activity is a visit to the friendly Turks and Caicos Rock Iguanas on Little Water Cay. Bird watchers will enjoy the country’s natural parks and nature reserves, which are home to flamingos, egrets, herons, ospreys, pelicans, and ducks. Every year, thousands of humpback whales pass through the Turks Island Passage near Salt Cay and Grand Turk in late winter.

The Best Islands For Your Vacation

The Best Islands For Your Vacation

Each island in Turks and Caicos offers something unique. Providenciales has beautiful beaches, restaurants, and water sports. Grand Turk has historical sites as well as a beautiful beachfront town. The garden islands of North and Middle Caicos hide some of the best coasts and landscapes in the country. Last but not least, South Caicos and Salt Cay provide an ideal blend of Old Caribbean atmosphere and pristine marine environment.

It’s important to remember that each of our islands has a different level of development, and not all water sports and activities are available on every island. The only islands connected by a road causeway are North and Middle Caicos.

By far the most water sports are available on the island of Providenciales. Jet skiing, parasailing, wakeboarding, kiteboarding, windsurfing, boat rentals, flyboarding, freediving, tubing, and other activities are available in addition to the popular activities of snorkelling, scuba diving, and boat tours.

Best Beaches in Turks and Caicos

Simply enjoying and relaxing on our world-renowned beaches is the undisputed top activity. There are numerous beaches to choose from in Turks and Caicos, all of which have crystal-clear water and soft white sand.

Turks and Caicos Island Fish Fry

Every Thursday from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., the Island Fish Fry takes place at PTV Stubbs Diamond Plaza in Providenciales. The Island Fish Fry is the most popular weekly event, bringing together over a dozen restaurant and souvenir vendors, a live band, and cultural performances to create an evening of “all things Turks & Caicos.”

The weekly event, hosted by the Turks and Caicos Tourist Board, invites both locals and visitors to enjoy an evening of fun in a family-friendly setting. The evening concludes with Junkanoo (a traditional procession of masqueraders in costume dancing to the rhythm of drums, cowbells and other native instruments). Come enjoy succulent local cuisine, lively entertainment, and a firsthand look at Turks and Caicos culture just steps from the world’s best beach, Grace Bay.

Snorkeling

Snorkeling

Snorkeling is one of the most popular activities for visitors to the Turks and Caicos Islands, and the islands have an abundance of vibrant reef formations and relatively calm waters in which to enjoy viewing them thanks to the Turks and Caicos Barrier Reef.

The Turks and Caicos Barrier Reef is the world’s third largest barrier reef, protecting Grace Bay Beach from large waves and keeping the waters calm and clear. From sea turtles and coral formations to starfish and eagle rays, the reef is home to a plethora of colourful and interesting marine life.

In addition to the barrier reef, the shallow turquoise waters surrounding Providenciales are home to a number of impressive smaller reef formations that are ideal for snorkeling—even for novices.

While booking a snorkelling tour with experienced dive professionals is usually the best way to enjoy snorkelling in Turks and Caicos, some of these formations can be seen from the beach and are quite easy to access. The following is a list of some of the best snorkelling spots in Providenciales that can be reached from the beach—possibly even close to your villa or resort.

Bright Reef (Coral Gardens)

Bright Reef (Coral Gardens)

The Bright Reef, also known as Coral Gardens due to its proximity to the same-named resort, is one of the most popular snorkelling spots in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

While the coral may not be as vibrant as at other sites, the Bight Reef is home to a diverse array of marine life and is an excellent place to start your Providenciales snorkelling adventure. The coral reef consists of a single main ridge that extends about 350 feet from the shore. At the reef’s deepest point, the water is about 15-20 feet deep.

Smith's Reef

Smith’s Reef is located in the Turtle Cove area of Providenciales and consists of multiple separate reef systems and coral heads, each with its own unique array of coral and fish. The outer reefs provide the best beach access snorkelling on the island. Divers, both experienced and inexperienced, will not be disappointed.

Smith’s Reef is a great place to see larger sea creatures like rays and turtles. Despite the fact that many different species of reef fish can be seen, such as barracudas, butterfly fish, damselfish, indigo hamlets, parrotfish, and many others.

Malcom’s Road Beach

Malcom’s Road Beach

Malcolm’s Road Beach, part of the Northwest Point Marine National Park, is less visited by tourists due to its remote location. This location is notable for its proximity to the sheer drop-off at the edge of the Caicos Islands plateau, or ‘the wall,’ as it is colloquially known.

While this site is easily accessible from the beach, it is best suited for experienced and skilled snorkelers. The water depth is approximately 50 feet at the wall, but quickly drops to over 7,000 feet just off the wall.

Malcolm’s Road Beach’s reef is home to a plethora of vibrant coral and multicoloured fish. Excellent snorkelling opportunities can be found all along the beach, though some may be more difficult to locate.

Many concrete reef balls have recently been placed, and while they do not yet support a thriving coral population, they do provide ideal hiding spots for many colourful reef fish. On clear days, the water clarity at this location is breathtaking, and it is not uncommon to see rays, sharks, and other large sea creatures.
