Is Haiti Safe For Tourists: 2022 Travel Advisory

Before boarding a flight to Haiti, passengers must show documentation of a COVID-19 (PCR or Antigen) test that was negative and was completed no more than 72 hours before boarding. At Toussaint Louverture International Airport, there is an arrival fee. Some people are exempt from the fee such as:

• A person born in Haiti who possesses a foreign passport
• A kid under the age of five
• An official or diplomatic passport holder
• A foreigner with a valid residence card
• An official or agent on a United Nations laissez-passer

Haiti has implemented steps to stop the COVID-19 virus from spreading, such as a curfew, the obligation to wear a face mask in public areas, and quarantine rules for anyone exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms. Travel restrictions are subject to sudden modification. Keep an eye on the news and obey the guidance of the local authorities.

You must pay a tourist fee to cross the land border from the Dominican Republic. You must pay in US dollars in person. Plan a placement for your volunteer work in Haiti before you travel there. It’s improbable that you’ll find employment there.                          

Some nations won’t allow you in unless your passport is still valid six months after your intended departure date. This is applicable even if you are only passing through or stopping over. The rule may not be consistently applied by some foreign governments and airlines. Different sources may give contradicting advice to travelers. If your passport’s expiration date is more than six months away, you risk being stranded.

Your passport is an important piece of documentation. It appeals to those who might attempt to steal your identity and commit crimes. You can encounter those who attempt to trick you into handing up your passport. Always store it in a secure location. Please notify the Government as soon as possible if your passport is lost or stolen or contact the closest embassy or consulate of your country if you’re abroad.

The Gourde (HTG) is the currency used in Haiti. Additionally, many people accept US currency. At reputable banks, exchange US money or travelers’ cheques. Other foreign currencies are accepted by some banks. Never exchange cash on the street.

With a current Australian driver’s license, you are allowed to drive in Haiti.

Other than that, you should have car registration, liability insurance documents, an international driving permit (IDP), and travel papers before departing for Haiti.

In Haiti, driving on the road is risky. Among the risks are:

• Aggressive driving
• Drivers who disregard traffic regulations
• Dark highways
• Badly maintained vehicles
• City roads in a reasonable condition
• After dark, automobiles, trucks, and motorbikes are operating without lights

Avoid driving or using public transportation after dark. You might have to take a detour through a dangerous place. Even in cities, avoid driving when the weather is bad. Keep your fuel tank at least half filled. Fuel supply disruptions are common. Carry your mobile phone and a list of contacts for emergencies. There is a lack of roadside help services. Rural areas have limited mobile phone coverage.

There are 4 crossing sites where cars can go between the Dominican Republic and Haiti, although there are huge lines. Make sure the car and travel documents you and the other passengers are using are legitimate. On Dominican roads near the border, thieves occasionally steal vehicles while posing as police officers.

Is Haiti safe for cruise passengers? If you take the ferry, be mindful of your possessions. Don’t go on a boat that seems dangerous or overloaded.
