Sunset House

Sunset House at Grand Cayman Islands

A well-developed shore diving spot with a resort, restaurant, and dive facility on the premises. Ladders can be used by divers and snorkelers to enter and exit the water safely.

Except for the sandy beach, which has an average depth of 15 ft/4.5 m, the area is deep, with an average depth of 30-50 ft (10-15 m). However, don’t let the deeper water deter you from adding Sunset House to your Grand Cayman snorkeling bucket list; the clear water allows you to see the gorgeous reef and even the mermaid statue from a depth of 50 feet/15 meters.

Governors Beach

Visit Governors Beach if you’re seeking an excellent snorkeling site on Seven Mile Beach. Although the popular 7MB does not have a large reef system, there are numerous lovely coral patches surrounding Governors Beach that attract marine life, making it a good snorkeling destination.

To find the reef, swim approximately 100-165 feet/30-50 meters from the coast and enjoy the Caribbean marine life!

Time Required

In just 3.5 hours, you’ll be frolicking on the stingray sandbar, snorkeling with tropical fish, and relaxing at Starfish Beach.

Anything to Be Mindful Of

You’ll see it done at Stingray City, but it’s now very regulated in terms of what can be done, when it can be done, and who can do it! Although there aren’t many black urchins in the waters around Cayman, it’s still a good idea to wear fins when snorkeling.

There is currently an invasion of lionfish, which are stunning to look at, but they don’t touch or harass rules that apply to these little beauties as well. You may get one of the tiny cards with all the local guys to look out for at any diving shop on the island.

Crystal Caves Tour on Grand Cayman Island

Siblings Walking at Crystal Caves Tour on Grand Cayman Island

Cayman Crystal Caves is the island’s newest nature tourism attraction, located in a lush tropical jungle near Northside, Grand Cayman. Guided walking tours are provided to all visitors.

The tours last about 12 hours and take you through the surrounding tropical forest area as well as three magnificent caverns. Over millions of years, the Cayman Crystal Caves have formed. The caverns’ fossilized shells and animal life indicate that the area now occupied by the caves was once completely submerged.

Rooms began to emerge from water erosion when sea levels fluctuated, and land began to rise, forming caverns. Rainwater dripping through the caves’ limestone ceiling left calcium deposits behind, forming stunning stalagmite and stalactite crystal patterns within these rooms. The caves are continuously evolving to this day.

Rainwater becomes somewhat acidic when it flows through surrounding plants, dirt, and other organic matter, resulting in stalagmite and stalactite development. As the acidic water seeps through the earth, it dissolves part of the limestone and re-deposits microscopic calcium layers as it drips from the cave ceilings.

The crystal structures are formed as a result of the accumulation of these deposits over time. Pirates used these caves as hideouts and sanctuaries from the elements, including hurricanes, hundreds of years ago. According to legend, pirate valuables are hidden in some of these caverns.

Here are some of the best things you can do when in Cayman Islands.

Bloody Bay Marine Park

Marine Life at Little Cayman, Cayman Island

This is the best diving area in Little Cayman, and it’s popular with both novices and experienced divers. The Bloody Bay Wall, a reef and drop-off that starts at 20 feet below the average sea level before falling straight down for more than 5,000 feet, is the major feature in the marine park.

At around 100 feet off the wall and into the dive, you can observe local stingrays and turtles. It’s incredible. Note that this expedition is not budget-friendly and is only recommended for experienced divers.

Your diving instructor and tour operator will be on the pricey side, but the depth of experience and information they bring will be well worth it. It’s worth the spending for what’s underneath.

According to a review, “On this trip, our third day of diving, my daughter was bummed about not seeing a shark yet. We went through a cut-through to the outer wall, and my daughter started fist-pumping.

I thought she was excited about the path we had taken and the depth she was diving, but then I spotted the shark overhead…just beautiful, dark blue water and the shark lit by the sun above…”

Wreck of Captain Keith Tibbetts

View of Wreck of Captain Keith Tibbetts, Cayman Island

Unnatural things can be amazing at times, and this is no exception. This dive location is located on the Captain Keith Tibbetts Wreck, a 330-foot-long Russian frigate that was intentionally destroyed off the coast of the Cayman Islands.

The wreck has become a home to thousands of groupers and marine life such as Green Money Eels and numerous species of Scorpionfish after being buried and maturing as a reef for many years. The Captain Keith Tibbetts Wreck is still complete and lies at a depth of roughly 100 feet.

Because the dive location is about 200 yards offshore, it is best approached by boat. The dive is suitable for beginners, but skilled divers may find it challenging if they opt to penetrate the wreck.

Location

This beautiful wreck is located on Cayman Brac’s northwest coast, although it may also be reached by boat from Little Cayman. The Soviet Union built this 330-foot Koni II class frigate for the Cuban Navy in 1984.
